We Mocked Compassion, Now We Miss It” — Governor Amuneke Reflects on Leadership Empathy
Governor Amuneke has stirred conversation with a reflective statement comparing past and present leadership styles, particularly highlighting former First Lady Patience Jonathan.
According to the governor, there was a time when Nigerians had a First Lady who openly expressed emotion and connected with the struggles of ordinary citizens. He noted that Patience Jonathan often “wore her emotions on her sleeve,” publicly sharing in the pain of the people.
He wrote
We once had a First Lady (Patience Jonathan) who wore her emotions on her sleeve and publicly shared in the pain of Nigerians. Many laughed, mocked, and called her tears ‘crocodile tears.’ Today, we are the ones shedding tears, while those in power seem unmoved by our struggles. Sometimes, we only appreciate compassion after it’s gone.”
