US Lawmaker Gregory Steube Questions Aid to Nigeria, Cites Security Concerns and Accountability
United States Congressman Gregory Steube has raised concerns over continued foreign aid to Nigeria, questioning whether such support should be maintained amid allegations of worsening insecurity and governance challenges.
In his remarks, Steube described the situation in Nigeria as deeply troubling, pointing to reports of violence, abductions, and attacks on communities.
“Nigeria has faced a horrific wave of violence that its corrupt government has failed to address,” he said, alleging that churches have been burned, women and girls abducted, and extremist groups allowed to operate with near impunity.
He further questioned the rationale behind continued financial support to the country under such conditions. “Why are we rewarding a government that fails to meet such a basic obligation?” he asked.
Steube emphasized that U.S. foreign aid should reflect accountability and measurable standards. “The generosity of our taxpayers is a reflection of the American values we hold so firmly,” he stated, adding that “foreign aid should never be a reward for failure.”
This is not about punishing the Nigerian people, but about demanding accountability from their government,” he said, urging Congress to ensure that aid recipients “meet the standard before receiving support.”
