It is claimed that Yerima bypassed the mandatory civilian passenger screening by entering the boarding terminal through the military wing of the airport. He reportedly attempted to board a ValueJet flight while in possession of a pistol.
When intercepted by airline staff or security, the officer allegedly resisted at first but eventually submitted to proper screening and declared his weapon before being allowed to board.
The situation reportedly escalated after the flight. The Nigerian Navy (or broader military authorities) allegedly sent an official letter to ValueJet. Instead of an apology for the breach, the letter reportedly accused the airline of “disrespecting” a military officer and demanded an apology for the delay and treatment he received.
The officer became a viral figure in November 2025 following a heated land dispute in Abuja with Minister Woke.
