Bandits Kill Four, Torch Homes and Farms in Zamfara Over Refusal to Pay Illegal Levies
At least four people were killed on Thursday evening after armed bandits launched a deadly attack on Gwargwaba village in the Nahuce District of Bungudu Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
Security sources disclosed that the assailants, who were reportedly heavily armed, invaded the rural community at about 6:00 p.m., setting multiple houses on fire and unleashing widespread destruction.
Residents said four villagers were trapped inside their homes during the inferno and were burned to death. Several buildings were razed, while food stores were destroyed in the blaze, leaving many families without basic supplies.
The attackers also slaughtered and burned livestock belonging to villagers, further compounding the devastation and economic losses suffered by the community.
According to a security analyst, Bakatsine, who shared details of the incident on X on Saturday, the attack was a reprisal following the villagers’ refusal to comply with illegal levies imposed by the bandits.
“The bandits stormed the village with sophisticated weapons, burning down homes, food stores and livestock. Four residents were burned alive in their houses. The assault reportedly came after the community rejected the unlawful taxes demanded by the attackers,” Bakatsine stated.
The latest incident adds to the growing list of violent attacks in Zamfara State, as residents continue to grapple with escalating insecurity and repeated assaults by armed groups.
