JUST IN: Police disperse #EndSARS memorial participants at Lekki Toll Gate
Security operatives on Tuesday fired teargas at participants marking the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.
The incident occurred as activists gathered to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the 2020 nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality, which saw thousands of young people take to the streets to demand an end to abuses by the police, especially operatives of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The memorial procession was organised by the Enough is Enough (EiE) movement to commemorate those who lost their lives during the protests.
Among those present at the gathering were: African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidates in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Funso Doherty.
The protesters were forced to flee as tear gas filled the area, disrupting the planned commemoration.
The tension has since subsided, and the area is now clear.
Despite the disruption, the activists vowed to continue the struggle for justice
