Obafemi George Says Nigeria’s Current Economic Struggles Could Have Been Avoided With Earlier Fuel Subsidy Removal
Political scientist Obafemi George has argued that Nigeria’s present economic difficulties could have been mitigated if fuel subsidy had been removed years earlier.
Speaking on national economic policy debates, George referenced past warnings issued by former Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who had cautioned that any administration succeeding former President Goodluck Jonathan would face significant economic pressures linked to subsidy payments.
According to him
Dr Abati you were in government when Sanusi Lamido was screaming that any government that succeeds Goodluck Jonathan will face economic headwinds because of subsidy. By 2014, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said that Nigeria was broke… If we had removed subsidy 10, 12 years ago, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
