U.S. bombs Iran’s Kharg Island
President Donald Trump announced that U.S. forces carried out a major bombing raid on Iran’s Kharg Island, claiming American aircraft “obliterated every military target” on the island.
The strike targeted military defenses and installations, not the oil terminals themselves.
Why Kharg Island is critical
Kharg Island handles about 90% of Iran’s oil exports and is the country’s main crude-oil loading terminal for supertankers in the Persian Gulf.
The facility can store tens of millions of barrels of oil and exports roughly 1.7–2 million barrels per day, making it a key part of the global oil supply.
Trump’s warning
Trump said he deliberately avoided destroying the oil infrastructure but warned it could be targeted if Iran interferes with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil route.
