“Cannabis Can Be Used to Make Clothes, Building Blocks and Medicine; Nigeria Should Export It” — Sowore
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has advocated for the legalisation and regulated use of cannabis in Nigeria, arguing that the plant has several economic and medical applications.
Sowore said cannabis contains THC, the psychoactive compound responsible for producing a “high,” but noted that the plant can be consumed in different forms, including being eaten or used in cooking.
He also highlighted the industrial potential of cannabis, stating that its stem and fibre can be used to make clothing and construction materials.
“The stem of a cannabis plant is the best for making clothes. Now it’s been detected or discovered that cannabis makes the best blocks for building houses,” It’s medicine. So my proposal is for us to actually be exporting it and raising money for medicine,” he said.
He cited Canada as an example, claiming that the country’s legalisation of cannabis has created a multibillion-dollar industry.
“In 2018, most countries were not even legalising cannabis. But Canada legalised around that period, and Canada is making four billion dollars every year,” Sowore added.
