“Exclusive breastfeeding mums have no business trying to lose weight” — Celebrity designer Veekee James shares her thoughts
Celebrity fashion designer Veekee James has shared her experience with breastfeeding, advising new mothers not to put themselves under pressure to lose weight while exclusively breastfeeding their babies.
In a video shared online, the designer said women who expect to lose their pregnancy weight immediately after childbirth may need to wait until they are done breastfeeding.
“If you are pregnant now and someone has told you, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll have your baby and then you can lose all the weight,’ you can still wait another 9 to 12 months before you start to dream about losing that weight,” she said.
Veekee explained that breastfeeding has affected her daily routine, including how frequently she eats and her ability to leave the house because her baby needs to be fed.
She also said breastfeeding mothers should expect to feel hungry at unusual hours and eat when their bodies demand food.
“If hunger catches you by 12 o’clock, you go chop. If hunger catches you by 1 a.m., you go chop. If hunger catches you by 2 a.m., you go chop,” she said.
According to her, mothers may initially notice some weight loss while breastfeeding, only to gain weight again later.
She encouraged mothers to focus on feeding their babies rather than worrying about their waistlines or body size.
“You go still lose all the weight. Make your breastfeeding finish. Because breastfeeding mum, she doesn’t do weight loss,” she added.
Veekee concluded by joking that babies are not concerned about their mothers’ weight or appearance because all they want is to be fed.
