Olu of Warri’s Views on Marriage
Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, has said that he will not take more than one wife and won’t practice polygamy, despite cultural expectations that monarchs often marry multiple wives. He explained his decision in a recent interview that was aired on BBC Pidgin and shared widely on social media.
Why He Prefers Monogamy
According to the traditional ruler:
Family harmony and balance are his top priorities, and he believes monogamy helps him maintain peace and stability at home.
He said managing more than one household would divide his energy, making it harder to give meaningful time to his wife and three children.
Because his role as a monarch already demands a lot of time — with frequent meetings, official duties, and calls from government and community leaders — he said he values the time he gets to relax and bond with his immediate family.
The Olu also stated plainly that he does not feel “graced” for polygamy, implying that it’s not something he believes he’s personally suited for.
