Soludo Introduces New Rules on Burials, Funeral Practices in Anambra State
The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has announced new regulations governing burial and funeral practices across the state.
According to the new directive, several traditional funeral activities have been restricted in a bid to promote order, reduce excessive spending, and minimize disruptions to economic activities.
The new rules include a ban on practices such as dancing with caskets, road blockages during burials, and prolonged funeral ceremonies. The government also stated that wake-keep activities must end by 9pm and that burial events should be concluded within a single day.
Additional provisions discourage the use of condolence gifts such as livestock, the display of posters or billboards of the deceased, and the sharing of souvenirs at funerals. The policy also limits how long bodies can remain in mortuaries to a maximum of two months.
