Beatrice Ekweremadu Arrived Nigeria After UK Prison Release
Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Nigerian Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after serving part of her prison term in the UK. She was released from prison and arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on January 21, 2026, where family members and close associates received her.
Beatrice was convicted in May 2023 for conspiring to facilitate the travel of a 21-year-old Lagos street trader to the UK for organ harvesting, with the intention of donating the kidney to their daughter, Sonia, who suffers from a chronic kidney condition. She was sentenced to four years and six months in prison, but was released early due to good conduct and a UK government initiative to address prison overcrowding.
Her husband, Ike Ekweremadu, remains in a UK correctional facility, serving a nine-year and eight-month sentence for his role in the conspiracy. The Nigerian government had attempted to secure his release or repatriation, but the UK Home Office rejected the proposal, citing concerns over sentence enforcement.
